Become A Part of Our Winning Tradition!

You've always wanted to do it yourself, or maybe you think it would be great for your kids...

TAE KWON DO!

We're not only one of the oldest Tae Kwon Do schools in the entire Washington area, but we're also ONE OF THE BEST!  Our students have won more championships and grand championships than any other school in the area.  We have competed in several different arenas, including the AAU, the USTU, NASKA, SKI, NBL, the Open Point Circuit, and the Promoters Plus Circuits.  Not to mention that the head instructor (9th Degree Black Belt, James Wyatt), is one of the most recognized Tae Kwon Do Black Belts in the area. In addition to that, 85% of the youth members are HONOR ROLL STUDENTS at their academic schools.  We're expanding our class size to 100 Tae Kwon Do students and we'd like for you to be a part of it.

To read how you and your whole family can be a part of our winning tradition, click here!

Happy New Year!!!!!

We Have So Much To Do in the New Year!

This year, we will celebrate more than 27 years of service to our community, and with that, we have so much to do to keep our program one of the best in the area.   We're planning new events, improving on the old ones and working to keep up with the martial arts times.

In the coming months we will:

  • Have All of the teaching Black Belts become CPR/AED certified
  • Train our students in Korean Handwriting
  • Attend the International Hall of Honor Awards in Ohio
  • Have the Spring and Summer Simsa for the Under Belts
  • Have the Fort Washington and the Reston Outdoor Training Workshops
  • Have our Female Students participate in the "All Female" Martial Arts Tournament
  • Test several Black Belts for the next Degree Level
  • Host the JW Spring Classics Martial Arts Tournament
  • Participate in several "Out of the Area" Martial Arts Tournaments
  • Several Weapons Workshops and Seminars
  • Host our First Summer Weekend Martial Arts Campout in Reston, VA
  • Host the "Master's Tea" For the Black Belt Candidates
  • Test several senior Students for the Black Belts
  • Have our Youth Students participate in the JW Kids Classics Martial Arts Tournament

And last, but not at all the least, we're adopting a new motto for this year.  It was created by Black Belt Candidate Alan Thomas of the Reston location.  There are many of you who wonder if you too can become a WTKDC Black Belt.  Well, this is our answer.  Click here to view.

It's gonna be a great year for us so...Get Ready For It!

It's HERE!!!

Master Wyatt's New Monthly Column....

"JUST KICKIN' IT!".

Now, you can read the opinion and thoughts of some of the areas most respected martial arts leaders in my new column called, "Just Kickin" It!".

The column will feature articles written each month from Masters and Grandmasters on General Martial Arts, their favorite techniques, the tournament circuit, martial arts tradition and etiquette, their style or system history and a lot more.  Read the comments of the professionals who have more than 30 years of experience in the martial arts.

This month's article will be written by my good friend Clarence Murray, owner and founder of Murray's Okinawan Karate.

Clarence P. Murray, Head Instructor of Murray’s Okinawan Karate, currently holds the rank of 7th Degree Black Belt (Nanadan) in the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu style of Karate.  He operates Murray’s Okinawan Karate located in Mitchellville, Md.

Master Murray began studying martial arts in 1963.  He received his black belt in Karate in 1969 and has taught the martial arts to students of all ages for over thirty years in the Washington Metro area.  He is nationally known for his expertise of traditional okinawan weapons, specializing in the Sai.  As a matter of fact, Master Murray and his weapons demo team were featured on ABC Wide World of Sports in 1975.

Master Murray has received numerous awards for his contributions to martial arts, including the Everhart’s Nippon Kenpo Karate-Do Living Legend Award and was inducted into the North American Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1995.  He has also been featured in the Washington Times, Official Karate, Karate Illustrated and Black Belt magazines.  Clarence Murray and his weapons demo team were featured on ABC Wide World of Sports in 1975.

Master Murray is a real "Traditionalist" when come to martial arts, and that's why he has chosen to write about the Effectiveness of Traditional Martial Arts in Today's Urban Settings.  Click here to read this facinating article.

One of the first females of the WTKDC was the young and athletic, Tawana Hagans.  Tawana was a driving force for getting more females to join our Tae Kwon Do program.  After attending Johnson C. Smith University, she not only became a Prince George's County Police Officer, but she began to promote and expand in her business savy.  This was an article from a newsletter Inside the Q in Charlotte.  While it tells a lot of how she lived and love life, it could never express how much we miss and love her.  http://www.qcitymetro.com/qcitymetroblog/post.cfm/in-memory-of-ko-ko

After More Than 15 Years of Service and Dedication to the WTKDC, Myra Gerald Receives a WTKDC

"Honorary Black Belt"

Myra Gerald has been an icon for the WTKDC for more than 15 years.  She has been an Administrator, an Instructor, a Teacher, a Coordinator, a Project Manager and until she has to have major surgery, a Tae Kwon Do Student.

As a matter of fact, her whole family was a part of the WTKDC organization, with her son, Kenneth Gerald, Jr. acheiving his Black Belt and then going on to attend Grambling University.

On Sunday, November 1, 2009, Myra was awarded an Honorary Black Belt by Master Wyatt before a huge crowd of on-lookers at the JW Kids Classics Martial Arts Tournament.

Master Wyatt says that he is sure, that had it not been for Myra's surgery, she would have definitely went on to be a WTKDC Black Belt.  She now has several responsibilities and priviliges of being a WTKDC Black Belt, including learning and participating in Blcak Belt Forms, assisting in Underbelt Testing and a lot more.

Congratulations goes out to Myra, and we are looking forward to seeing a lot of you in the future!

At The Washington Tae Kwon Do Club, Our Students Learn More Than Just

"Kicking and Punching"

The Study of Korean Writing and Korean History is not Easy, but...the WTKDC Black Belt Candidates are handling the challenge!

J ung Kim gives a lesson on Korean History

to the Black Belt Candidate Students

At the Washington Tae Kwon Do Club, our program is not just about kicking and punching.  In addition to all of the mechanics and fundamentals that each student must learn, they are also required to learn the art of Korean hangul (Korean writing) and a bit of the Korean history, as well as Tae Kwon Do history.  To see what else our students learn, click here.

More Intense Training For

WTKDC Black Belts

The WTKDC Black Belt Candidates become CPR/AED certified

The Black Belts of the WTKDC are not only skilled in their Tae Kwon Do techniques, but they are also trained to avoid unecessary injuries and possibly save lives.  Each Black Belt candidate (Brown Belt) and teaching Black Belt must undergo training in Lung Revival, Heart Revival, Neurological Shutdowns and Infant and Adult CPR/AED training before they are eligible to test for the rank of Black Belt.

Several of the candidates became certified in May by the American Heart Association in both CPR and AED response rescue.  Each candidate had to perform the proper techniques of saving a life in an actual heart failure situation by using mouth to mouth techniques and the use of an AED (Automatic Electronic Defribulator).

They each must be able to use these techniques in the case of a accidential classroom situation, or even an event outside of the dojang.  Their next quest is to become certified in the revival techniques of Kyusho Jitsu.  One more reason why you and your kids will be in good hands at the Washington Tae Kwon Do Club.

MYRA GERALD brought us back together!

Myra Gerald (pictured on the right with the gold blouse) stands with some of the past and present WTKDC Members at the 1st Annual WTKDC Reunion Picnic, at the Ft. Washington National Park

It was more than 26 years ago that the WTKDC opened its doors to the community and started changing the lives of many of the youth and adults of the Temple Hills area.  Since our enception, we have trained and coached more than 4,000 students and has produced more than 30 Black Belts.

Many of these students and Black Belts have gone on to persue other interests, moved out of the area, gone away to colleges and universities, changed jobs, gotten married, had kids and a host of other reasons that have kept them away from training and working out with us.  But on Saturday, July 17, 2009, Myra Gerald changed all of that and planned and coordinated the First Annual WTKDC Reunion Picnic, at Fort Washington National Park, in Ft. Washington, Maryland.

More than 100 former and current students and several Black Belts came to join us for a day of good food, old stories, basketball, football, card games and just an over all great time.  So many of the "little youth" had grown up so big, that Master Wyatt didn't recognize several of them.  Many of the youth have gone to medical school, professional sports, colleagte sports, owning their own businesses, top and national

One of the First WTKDC           careers and so much more

Students, Ms Delores Diggs

The event was so well planned, that it seemed that Myra had been working on this for months.  Every one had a great time and it was good to see those who we had not seen for years.

The event is not just for the Tae Kwon Do members, participants of master Wyatt's High Impact Class, the Self Defense class and even the Karate After School program are welcome to come and join us next year.  So that you won miss out on the fun, go to the "Contact Us" Section and send us your name and email address, or write to WTKDC1@aol.com.

We're looking forward to seeing you and your family at next year's Annual Reunion Picnic.

The WTKDC....We're Not Just "Kicks and Punches"!

Not only do we teach championship Tae Kwon Do, but we also train our students in various types of martial arts weapons.  As a matter of fact, most of our students have become winners in the Weapons divisions of several local, regional and national martial arts tournaments.

The WTKDC Students train long and hard in such weapons as the bo staff, the escrima sticks, the katana sword, the nunchucks, the knives, the kamas and the sais.

The work is hard and the students MUST be able to concentrate one hundred per cent of their training time.

Our Tuesday evening weapons class is for those who want to add another tool to their martial arts arsenal.  Classes are held from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Youth students have also learned the additional discipline that it takes to use any of the weapons.  One loss of concentration can cause serious injury; therefore, the student MUST give his full dedication and concentration.  This practice is not only used in our facility, but it is also carried on in the youth's academic school.  Which is one reason we believe that most of our youth are on their school's scholastic Honor Roll.

Several of the students are now going on to compete in the national martial arts tournaments and are training very hard to make sure that they come away winners.

The Master's High Energy

"Kick" Workshop

Master Wyatt shows that he can still get off the floor as he demonstrates the principles of the distance jump side kick at his dynamic kick workshop!

It was truly a gruling learning experience for  the WTKDC students.  The art of Tae Kwon Do is a very challenging style.  Tae Kwon Do is known for it's powerful kick techniques, and at Master Wyatt's Kick Workshop, the students learned not only how to kick, but in the four hour session, they also learned how to apply the kick to fight situations, proper technique, speed techniques, several different kicks, breaking with a power kick and a whole lot more.

Students from the Reston facility, The International Monetary Fund, The White House, The Department of Education, The InterAmerican Development Bank, and the Fort Washington locations were all present and litterally "Worked their legs off"! Despite the tiring workout, everyone had an enjoyable time.

We know that lots of adults want to come work out with us, but their time schedule does not allow it.  Just for those with the hectic schedule, now we have our "Midnight Madness" Training Sessions, every Friday night from 9:00 p.m. until midnight (or sometimes later).

It's quiet, it's private, it's intense and most of all...it's FUN!  We've had some of the best and most well know Black Belts to come work out and train us, including the head of Simba Dojang, Inc., Grandmaster Furman Marshall, Grandmaster Reggie Jackson, Sr., Grandmaster Ali Shabazz, Master Albert Cheeks, Master Samuel Scott, Grandmaster Reggie Jackson, Sr., and Professor Al Wood, just to name a few.

Come on out and give it a try, no kids, just serious adults.  You'll learn a lot and you'll be glad you did!

"The Avengers" At Their Fundraiser Roast

Almost 250 years of martial arts experience stands together at the Avengers Fundraiser Event

"Back in the Day" there were several martial arts schools in the Washington Metropolitan area that were strong and powerful institutions.  Schools like Cobra Dojang, The Scorpions, the Jaguars, The DC Dragons, the Wheel Kickers, The Shoguns, The Champions, and the Warlords, just ot name a few.  Some of the most fierce battles took place between the students of Grandmaster Furman Marshall's Simba Dojang of Washington, D.C. and Grandmaster Riley Hawkins' Avengers Karate Club of Baltimore.

On Saturday, January 17, 2009, the Avengers honored their Founder and head of their organization, 10th Degree Grandmaster Riley Hawkins, at the Maryland Institute College of Art Gateway Building ballroom, Baltimore, Maryland.  The room was filled with years of photos which told over 40 years of the organization's history, along with several masters and grandmasters of the martial arts, news reporters, community leaders, area business owners and many more.

After the delicious delicious seafood and chicken dinner, there was a roast of several "Old School" notables, including Simba Dojang's own Grandmaster Furman Marshall, Grandmaster Reggie Jackson, Sr., Dr. Joe Parrish and Master James Wyatt.

Is Martial Arts A Good Activity for Your Child?

Mfundi Tayari Casel, and Kwanjang James Wyatt

Recently, Master Wyatt sat on a board of select martial martial artist who is making a strong statement to the community that martial arts in not just about Kicking and Punching.  While many parents put their kids in a martial arts program for many reasons, we like to think of our programs as "life skills" and "personal development" programs.

The Forum, which was hosted by Master Samuel Scott, of The Full Circle Martial Arts Academy put forth a power discussion on the well being and the survival of our youth.  Each of the board members stated that in their school, several "old school" disciplines is an absolute must, including, morals and character issues like tradition, courtesy, respect, integrety, and honor, just to name a few.

With all that is going on in our school school systems and neighborhoods, this pannel feels that our youth should also be taught that words like "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" should still be a part of today's vocabulary and how to properly (and proudly) wear a uniform as well as other values such as obeying parents and teachers, helping others, patience and doing your best in every aspect.

The panel plans to meet with local government officials to try to implement a special martial arts program in the school system.  After all, what would you rather your child belong to...a disciplined martial arts school or the local neighborhood gang?

Master Wyatt is Inducted into Three (3) Nationally Recognized Hall of Fame Organizations

Master Wyatt Helps to "Make a Difference" in New Orleans

Musician's Village at the revitalization site in New Orleans.

One of the requirements to becoming a WTKDC Black Belt is to perform several hours of community service.  It is such a wonderful feeling and a much needed act to help others who are less fortunate than us or to assist those who have been hit by tragedy and hard times.

Recently, Master Wyatt and several other Black Belts traveled to New Orleans to assist in the revitalization and the rebuilding of one of most terrible tragedies in American history.

Team Wyatt helped to construct home number 1709 at the Musician's Village.  The homes in this location will house several families of various noted New Orleans musicians who lost their homes during the Katrina catastrophe.

It turned out not only to be a very rewarding experience, but at times, it was also extremely emotional to see, and to actually stand on the land where so much devestation had taken place.

Master Wyatt says that he knows that he can't help everyone and all of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but to the residents of home number 1709 in Musician's Village, he did.

He also says that with all of the thousands of martial arts leaders, students and parents in the United States, we should be able to do more to help and to assist this effort.  Master Wyatt will travel back to New Orleans next year to continue the much needed work.

It was a big afternoon at the International Hall of Honor Seminar.  The crowd was entertained by several Master Black Belts from all across the world including Jamaica, Trinidad, Columbia, Canada, and Hawaii.

The instructors put on seminars ranging from Self Defense, to Forms, to various weapons and mechanics.   Soke Abdul Bilal amazed the crowd with his special art of Self Defense.  Master Sylvester Chetham did a wonderful workshop on some of the forms of his system and Master Wyatt put on an impressive workshop with the Japanese Sword..  Everything was culminated by Sifu Abdulmushy's Push Hands workshop.

The workshops were intense and the learning was awesome.  Several of the Seminar instructors agreed to do special workshops for the WTKDC, so be sure to keep in touch with our website for what's happening in 2008.
