Translated
into English, Tae Kwon Do means "The art or way of hands and/or
feet (kicking and punching)". Tae Kwon Do is the Korean system
of unarmed combat, utilizing both the feet and the hand as weapons.
But it is more than just a fighting skill - it is a strict physical
and mental discipline. Through the coordination of body control,
balance and technique trained in the forms, this martial art becomes
a highly effective means of self defense as well as a practical
method of physical fitness. Tae Kwon Do is known among the oriental
fighting arts for its powerful kicking techniques and primarily
linear motions in combat, as opposed to a more circular and "softer" style
such as Kung Fu.

Many
Tae Kwon Do practitioners still refer to their art as the Korean
style of Karate. "Karate" is a Japanese word meaning "empty
hand", but it has come to be recognized as the generic name
for all karate-like arts - whether Japanese in origin or not. The
WTKDC is known for being one of the Winningest Tae Kwon Do Schools
in the entire Washington Area. We teach the traditional and the
sport systems of Tae Kwon Do, using safe and proven methods.
Each adult instructor is a Certified Black Belt, and has at least
10 years of Martial Arts experience. This means that your child
will get some of the best instruction and discipline in the area.

At the WTKDC,
we don’t teach
and train students “How To Fight”, we train them “How
NOT To Fight”; how to become leaders, champions, and
future role models. More than 85% of our youth students are
Honor Students in their academic schools. The youth students
train long and hard, and because of their intense training,
many of them are local, regional and even national martial
arts champions.
Martial Arts helps to build character,
confidence and self-esteem. Each student is taught to resist
peer pressure and evil temptations.
Youth students learn to be leaders and not followers; to respect
their parents, teachers, friends, and most of all, themselves.
We also reinforce and install a lot of those “Old Time” values
that have become lost in today’s society, like saying “Yes
Sir and Yes Ma’am”, removing hats in the building,
proper dress, the importance of school grades and so much more.
Studies also show that martial arts students are 80% less likely
to get injured than if they were playing in other contact sports
like football or basketball. Finally, with Tae Kwon Do being
an official Olympic sport in the World Olympic Games, not only
could your child someday become an Olympic hero, but they may
also qualify for college scholarships.
